Design Notes April 2016 Inspiring India

When House & Garden's Decoration Director, Gabby Deeming, decided to take a three month sabbatical in India, we were envious to say the least. Who doesn't dream of going off on an adventure to renew one’s creative spirit? Luckily for us, Gabby has been sharing glimpses of her journey on Instagram. With its blue houses, pink cities and Holi, the annual festival of color, it’s no wonder the colours of India are fueling this month’s column.

Design Notes April 2016 Inspiring India

Take the vibrant cafe at Narain Niwas Palace in Jaipur designed by Marie-Anne Oudejans. The riot of pattern feels completely fresh thanks to the common thread of color that unites the space. It’s a setting that would translate beautifully to a bathroom, from the striped ceiling to the trellis and Chinoiserie walls to the muted geometric floor tile. For a subtler approach, Gabby’s pink and green block print would make the loveliest roman shade in a powder room painted with fern green walls. Tissus d'Hélène carries a range of artisan-made fabrics in this vein. We also love the way Nina Campbell’s pink and green Paradiso wallpaper softens a contemporary bathroom. The gathered fabric shade on the wall light, and the painted bamboo mirror, further elevate the space. For similar effect, our Leila wall light can be custom made with the fabric of your choice.
