Design Notes April 2012 Mirror, Mirror on the Wall…

With the release of not one but two Snow White movies in the coming months, everyone seems to be buzzing about mirrors. Julia Roberts’ aptly named flick, “Mirror, Mirror,” rolls into cinemas this week while Charlize Theron’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” hits the silver screen with a decidedly darker twist in June.

When I think of mirrors, one particular image always comes to mind – photographer Paul Costello’s captivating shot of designer Miles Redd leaping into the air, tuxedo-clad with top hat and cane to boot. The young New York dandy, who also happens to be the creative director of Oscar de la Renta’s home collection, outfitted his master bathroom with floor to ceiling mirrors for an effect that is so dazzling, he’s been known to host candlelit dinner parties in the glamorous en suite!

While Redd’s mirrors were salvaged from the David Adler designed Armour estate (c.1931), you can achieve a similar look of Directoire French paneling by commissioning a local supplier to cut bespoke panels of antiqued mirror glass. Try Rupert Bevan in London, Mirror Works in Shrewsbury, or Rough Old Glass in West Sussex.
