Design Notes January 2011 Soho Beach House

In the midst of a seriously white winter and with half term rapidly approaching, visions of sandy beaches and sunny skies are tempting even the most committed snow bunnies.  Do as we plan to do and head south; or more specifically southwest to America’s Riviera – Miami, Florida. Don’t let thoughts of Miami Vice-era glitz and grit leave you suspect, the city is experiencing a renaissance with a burgeoning design and fashion scene thanks to fairs like Art Basel and an influx of cult boutiques like The Webster.

Besides, you needn’t leave England entirely behind. British members club, the Soho House, has opened their latest outpost on Miami Beach. Kitted out by London-based designer Martin Brudnizki, complete with a Cecconi’s restaurant and a sizable Cowshed Spa, this club doubles as a hotel for which you need not be a member to check-in. Housed in an Art Deco site with a decidedly Cuban flair, it’s a little dose of London in the tropics.

Applauded for his sophisticated, modern interiors, Brudnizki created a space that is eclectic and laid back while still exuding the glamour of Miami’s Golden Era. Rooms boast antique furniture with spacious bathrooms in an eye-catching palette of sea green and chocolate brown. We especially love Brudnizki’s bold use of hexagonal tiles that climb the bathroom walls and are adorned with Edison bulbs flanking oversized mirrors. Oh yes, and then there’s that free-standing tub overlooking the beach plus a generous rain shower to rinse away the days saltwater. Winter suddenly doesn’t seem so bad...
