An Oxfordshire Family Bathroom

This Oxfordshire bathroom by London-based designer Henri Fitzwilliam-Lay is a brilliant example of how our Hanley Hand Cut and Tube Line Decorative tiles work so well together. Here, she combined ceramic Squares, Half Squares, and Liners, reversing colours, and boldly transitioning between colours with Zigzag stripes.

As she told Homes & Gardens magazine, “How you lay a tile can completely change the way it reads and creates its own texture. Mix colors, stagger, stack, make stripes, use patterned borders — the possibilities are endless."

There's a sense of timelessness to Fitzwilliam-Lay's work. She is often celebrated for her ability to nod to the past whilst keeping projects firmly rooted in the present (cue House & Garden magazine's Top 100 list). Pairing our tiles with vintage-style fixtures like The Water Monopoly’s Rockwell basin and taps, with their ceramic handles and aged brass finish, speaks to that eye. And we love how she balanced those elements with a sleek medicine cabinet and rather glamorous prismatic glass wall lights — their brass brackets complementing the hardware throughout the space.

This room also illustrates how a built-in bath presents another opportunity for creative expression thanks to the additional installation surface — something that cannot be replicated by a freestanding tub.

“I like to look at the walls and floors as a blank canvas and create a ‘frieze’ or ‘carpet’ to fill the space — bath panel included.”
