English Coastal Kitchen
Tiles featuring marine symbols by artist Fee Greening were the perfect addition to a townhouse kitchen in Salcombe designed by Sarah Southwell.
In updating this Victorian kitchen on the Devon coast, Sarah looked to our Curios collection for the backsplash and selected tiles with coral, seaweed and shell motifs. These playful illustrations nod to the seaside locale while picking up the pinky hue of the Plain English cabinetry, painted Tailor Tack by Farrow & Ball.
Interspersing the arrangement with plain Hanley Hand Cut Tiles in a translucent finish keeps the installation feeling loose and airy, while nearby joinery in Cook’s Blue and a cabana stripe window shade add to the room’s whimsical, welcoming feel.
Fee's original artworks are hand drawn in black ink with a dip pen. When we translate these illustrations onto tile at our factory in Stoke-on-Trent, we screen print the designs using a black underglaze onto a glazed hand cut tile.
We then fire the black ink outline to set the design. Next, our decoration team adds hand painted details using overglazes or enamels before a third and final firing.
