Hand Painted Botanical Mural
Creativity abounds in this townhouse apartment in Belgravia, where interior designer Sophie Ashby of Studio Ashby sought to bring a sense of decoration to every room. For the new kitchen, she commissioned a custom tile mural by artist Anna Glover, transforming what is typically a functional space for cooking and dining into an enchanting artistic retreat.
Sophie’s brief for Anna was to draw inspiration from the hand-painted screens of Japanese artist Tawaraya Sōtatsu and design a blooming garden that would envelop the room.
As luck would have it, Anna counts Sōtatsu among her heroes and could not have been more delighted. With a nod to the home’s English locale, she illustrated a scene of poppies, hollyhocks, chrysanthemums, and trailing vines, coupled with birds and dragonflies, which Balineum was then entrusted to translate onto hand-painted tiles.
Cabinetry and wainscoting painted Guatemala green by Argile, along with leafy green mohair upholstery, anchor the mural's pastoral palette, while the riotous veining of Breccia Capraia marble gives the scheme an edge.
