Retro Style Bathroom
Inspired by the home of a client’s late grandparents, architects Suleïma Ben Achour and Antoine Lallement of Studio Classico infused a bathroom in a converted 19th-century building outside Paris, with hallmarks of 1970s style.
Not all designers get lucky with clients who are willing to push the creative envelope, but this homeowner was keen to do something unconventional. Referencing an image of Balineum’s Mottled tiles in a checkerboard pattern, he commissioned Studio Classico to create a fully tiled custom vanity in a combination of Mottled M8 and solid Hanley Hand Cut Tiles in Teapot. Those forming the sides are finished with rounded edges. The walls are tiled in white to dado rail height and finished with corresponding 126mm Liner and Half Rounds in Teapot for contrast.
Vintage yellow towel holders and hooks by Makio Hasuike reinforce the decidedly retro tone, while wall-to-wall carpet underfoot lands just the right side of kitsch. “It adds to the sensation of having passed into the private sphere of the apartment,” Suleïma told Remodelista.

Balineum's Mottled tile collection is inspired by original Victorian tiles that our founder, Sarah Watson, spotted in the heritage public houses of Manchester. Each piece is sponge-painted with layers of colour, then individually finished by hand to ensure each tile is unique.
