A Hampstead Family Kitchen
Channeling a home’s original Victorian details, designer Tom Morris of Morrisstudio specified Balineum’s Mottled tiles in the M2 glaze for a colourful kitchen in north-west London. “There is a beautiful section of original mottled tiles by the front door, so it felt vernacular to bring them in the kitchen. They helped bring in texture and break up the colour blocking elsewhere in the design,” he says.
The kitchen is part of an extension done by the home's previous owner, which Morris sought to enliven with period charm. To achieve the effect, they commissioned bespoke joinery from Apron Kitchens, painted Rosewood by Rose Uniacke, and specked a copper island worktop and range hood in a nod to Victorian cookware. The back countertop is charcoal black granite and seems to disappear between the backsplash and joinery.
Adding to the room’s autumnal colour palette (inspired by the nearby Heath) the ceiling is painted Lulworth Blue by Farrow & Ball and the dining chairs by Pinch London are upholstered in saffron leather. “The balance of colour is quite powerful and a wonderful frame to the colours in the beautiful garden outside,” says Morris.

Mottled tiles are sponged with a minimum of two glazes to create the distinctive tortoiseshell pattern. Our makers work in to each tile individually to ensure they are unique and that the pattern is varied once they are installed.
